2006 New Orleans Saints and football betting

2006 Football betting review:  The New Orleans Saints were the best story of the 2006 football betting season.  Just a year after playing all 16 games outside of New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina and finishing 3-13, the Saints were back in New Orleans and went 10-6 and won the NFC South.

Football betting players liked New Orleans in the 2006 NFL betting season as the team went 10-6 against the spread. NFL betting fans thought New Orleans would go over a lot in 2006 but that was not always the case as the Saints went 8-8 on over/unders.  Sean Payton did a fantastic job as head coach, Drew Brees played like the Pro Bowl quarterback he is and Reggie Bush looked like a future hall of famer when he got the ball.  Football betting fans saw how linebacker Scott Fujita led an improved defense and everything went very well for the Saints in the 2006 NFL betting season.

In 2005 one of the worst natural disasters in American history ravaged the bayou city of New Orleans and killed thousands.  It effectively brought the city crashing to a standstill.  The New Orleans Saints had always been a bad team but now that seemed of little importance, and least they now had an excuse for their play as they didn’t even have a home field after the Hurricane Katrina came through.  But that was a year ago and by the time the 2006 NFL betting season had come along, rebuilding had begun and the city finally had their NFL football betting franchise back.  The team became a rallying symbol for the city and one the few joys it had as it tackled the long road to recovery.

Fortunately the team didn’t disappoint.  It was an extremely busy football betting off-season in almost every way imaginable.  Aside from the obvious rebuilding and moving and remodeling that had to be done with nearly every building in the city, the Saints were busy moving and rebuilding as well.  The Chargers inexplicably let Drew Brees leave as a free agent after the 2005 season and the Saints won the bidding for his services.  And based on his performance he was worth every penny of the fat contract he was awarded.  Only a football betting season removed from the disaster of Katrina and the 2005 season, this team exploded under is leadership and great play.

Brees made this team and this city believe again.  His numbers were magic and unlike anything the football betting fans had seen here in decades.  He ranked at the top of nearly every NFL betting stat as he threw for 4,400 yards, completed 64% of his passes, had 26 TDs and only11 INTs and ended with a whopping 96.2 QB rating.  It was a great year Brees personally as he proved he still had what it took to be a franchise QB and it was a great football betting year for the team as they finished with a 10-6 record and made it all the way to the NFC Championship game.

But Brees wasn’t the only addition to this squad on the offensive side of the ball there were two rookies that were integral to this team’s football betting success.  By some wild act of God, which the citizens of New Orleans are all to familiar with, Reggie Bush, the players everyone in American last year called the greatest talent to come out of college in decades fell into lap of the Saints.  They swooped him up and, man, what a great player he proved to be.  His skills completely rattled the other teams D and created nightmare match ups for defensive coordinators.  He finished that football betting year with 565 yards rushing and 745 yards receiving on 88 catches.  He also had a number circus plays that made SportCenter and returned some punts for scores as well.  But the real rookie score who came from nowhere to put up huge football betting numbers was Hofstra standout Marques Colston.  Colston, smashed team’s rookie receiving football betting records with 70 catches for 1038 yards and 8 TDs.  He as drafted in the seventh round and team officials didn’t even expect him to make the team.

On defense the Saints were also a bit surprising.  The unit had been lackluster the previous football betting year but all of a sudden jump onto the radar of opposing offenses and finished 11th in total defense in the football betting league.  It as 13th in points allowed per game and third against the pass.  However, it was miserable against the run and ranked 23rd with opponents averaging 128 yards a game.

This team headed into the playoffs riding a wave of success and many football betting fans thought they were shoe-ins for the Super Bowl and they may have been if it hadn’t been for the frigid weather of Chicago in January.  The elements were simply too much for a dome team like Saints, and it wasn’t so much that they Bears beat them in the NFC Championship game as they succumbed to the weather, but any you look at it, it was great 2006 for the Saints.  Under first football betting year head coach Sean Payton this team accomplished much more than even the biggest Saints homer could have imagined.  It was great for the players, the football betting franchise, and especially the people of New Orleans.
