2006 football betting review:  The Pittsburgh Steelers started off a disappointing 2-6 last football bettingseason and never recovered.  Quarterback Ben Roethlisburger looked shaky all football betting season and head coach Bill Cowher decided to move on.  Football betting players really never figured out the Steelers as the team went 7-8-1 against the NFL betting spread.

Surprisingly, the team went over in 9 football betting games last season.  The defense was just average last football betting season and needs an upgrade and perhaps defensive specialist Tomlin will bring his philosophy as head coach to the defense.  The offense during the past football betting season was sporadic since Roethlisburger did not play well coming off the injuries in the off-season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers started 2006 football betting season as the defending Super Bowl champs.  In fact, the 2006 football betting calendar year started off as good as it can get for the team from Pittsburgh.  They snuck into the playoffs as a wild card and then won three in a row on the road and then, the big enchilada.  But what was expected to be the start of a dynasty, a triumphant return to the field to defend the football betting championship in 2006, a great NFL betting season for the fans, quickly became a nightmare.  Before the first snap of the first game of the football betting season, the centerpiece of the franchise, the QB was out with a near death motorcycle wreck.  Big Ben was tossed from his motorcycle without a helmet and nearly drowns from his own blood.  Not a good signal for football betting fans and NFL betting lines.

But he lived and was back with the team in matter of months.  Only to have his appendix burst and have to be sidelined for two more games during that football betting period.  When he finally did return, a concussion sent him out again.  Between all the injuries, Rotehlesberger never really had time to get himself settle into the offense and it never really clicked the way it should for a defending NFL betting Super Bowl champ.  He missed multiple football betting games and really had no chance to ease into offense.  NFL betting fans found that Charlie Batch filled in admirably in his absence but is a care taker signal caller at best.

However, Big Ben wasn’t the only problem during the football betting season for the team (and most of Ben’s problems were medical related).  The offensive line was garbage allowing 54 sacks in one of their worst performances in football betting years, but again, several key players to get a good NFL betting result were hurt.  The offense also bid farewell to Steelers’ legend Jerome Bettis who may have looked like he was getting on in years, but who was still very key to offense as evidenced by the Steelers poor third down conversion rate which was the result of too many third and longs that evolved as Bettis wasn’t there to soften up the middle on first and second downs and keep defenses honest in short yardage situations on these football betting games.

Willie Parker played his guts out and put up another huge football betting season, racking up an NFL betting average of 1500 yards with a 4.4 yard per carry average and 13 touchdowns; the yardage and touchdowns both Steelers records, surpassing hall-of-famer Franco Harris.  Veron Hayes was also neutralized and was a non-factor.  Najeh Davenport, a free agent signing from Green Bay was brought in as a possible replacement to the Bus, but the dump truck, despite a few good games, proved to be an only very modest addition to this football betting period.

The Super Bowl MVP and aging veteran Hines Ward had another great football betting season but injuries kept him out of several games and as a result he missed the 1000 yard mark by a measly 25 yards.  This was the football betting year that Nate Washington was expected to step as he had put on a great training camp, and he was good but not great.  One very pleasant surprise was Antonio Holmes the number one draft pick of the Steelers in 2006 football betting season, who came on very strong at the end and finished the football betting season the number two receiver with 824 yards and 2 touchdowns.  But what most impressive was the fact that he started to become the field stretcher that the team had been looking for since Plexico Buress departed and averaged a whopping 18 yards per catch.

The defense was hardly the steel curtain last football betting year either.  In what has to be considered a bit of a let down for this squad they ranked ninth in total defense, 3rd against the run but twentieth against the pass and there lies the biggest weakness of this 2006 team.  The secondary was awful but there also was never enough pressure applied on the quarterback either.  The team unbelievably ranked 27th in sacks, completely unacceptable for a Steelers’ team and football betting fans.  Joey Porter struggles, despite notching seven sacks was basically non existent on the field.  Troy Palumalu was knocked out with a concussion and struggled a bit thereafter hawking three interceptions but his tackles were down.

Yet through it all, this team, which suffered some terribly unlucky losses, like a laugher to the Raiders where the Steelers dominated only to loose on returned INTs for touchdowns, was in the playoff hunt the very end.  Many NFL betting fans will claim it was the worst defense of a Super Bowl title ever, and it might have been, but this team was a lucky bounce or two away from making another deep run in the playoffs after turning around the football betting season in the second half and finishing 8-8.
