2006 Review: Football betting fans know that things were ugly in Washington last season and it could be that head coach Joe Gibbs is finally feeling the heat. Many NFL betting fans know that the Redskins were thought of as legitimate NFC East contenders in 2006 but they flopped with an old quarterback in Mark Brunell and an injury to Clinton Portis.

Football betting players that backed Washington were losers most of the year as the Skins finished 5-9-2 against the football betting spread. The Washington Redskins were about a break even proposition on totals going 7-6-3 against the football betting line. NFL betting fans know that quarterback Jason Campbell took the reigns from Brunell and at least gave football betting fans some hope for the future.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS 2006 NFL BETTING REVIEW

There are more than a few disappointing teams in the 2006 regular football betting season but perhaps none was as disappointing as the Skins.  Washington has long struggled to field a good team under the ownership of Daniel Synder, and although the team makes a lot of money under his guidance, it can not produce a decent season for anything.  Coming off a playoff football betting season in which the team got hot at the end of the year and even won a playoff game it looked as if this team had the foundation of something pretty good to build in 2006 NFL betting .  So the team went nuts in free agency market bringing in all kinds of players and over paying for almost all of them.

The Skins jettisoned troublesome but talented LB LaVar Harrington.  They brought Adam Archuletta at a price that no one had every before paid for a safety.  They also brought in the Steelers number two receiver Antoine Randal El, for number one receiver type of money.  They also added several other signees and they hoped to build through free agency rather than the draft.  This policy has served them horribly in past football betting seasons if continued to fail them in 2006.  What should have been a year in which the Skins were competing for a division crown turned into a nightmare?  The team finished dead last in the division, not even close to competitive. With a 5-11 record, the only upside to the football betting season was very high pick in this year’s draft.

It’s hard to nowhere to pinpoint the problem, but the QB spot was definitely a problematic 2006 NFL betting season for this team.  The team went with a QB by committee approach which has never worked in the history of the NFL and it didn’t work last season for Washington either.  Mark Brunnell started the most games and was aright, nothing great but alright.  In limited action he completed 62% of his passes for 1800 yards, 8 TDs and 4 picks for an 86.5 QB rating.  But Brunell is about 60 years old and management wanted to let the young kid get some practice once the football betting season was in the toilet.  So, Jason Campbell came on to mop up a worthless NFL betting season, completing 53% of his passes for 1300 yards, 10 TDs and 6 picks, not bad numbers and a 76 QB rating.

The receiving football betting stats took a shot due to the poor QB numbers and the numbers for this group was pretty bad as well.  Santana Moss was again the leading receiver but far from his break out year last football betting season, he aught only 55 balls for 790 yards and 6 TDs.  Chris Cooley was the number two threat with 57 catches for 734 yards and 6 TDs.  Randal El proved to be a bust, at least in his first football betting year, as a starting receiver in this mediocre offense.

Running the ball wasn’t such a struggle for this group with a stable of talented backs and decent line, but defenses were too often able to key on this.  Clinton Portis went down early with a broken hand and only racked up 500 yards on limited action.  He got seven touchdowns though and averaged 4 yards per carry.  Ledell Betts picked up the slack and proved a handful for other defenses as he rumbled for 1154 yards on a 4.7 yards per attempt average.

But as bad as the offense was the defense was worse.  It ranked near the bottom in every statistical football betting category.  It was 27th in points per football betting game allowed with 23.5.  It was 31st in total yards per game allowed with 355.5.  It was 27th against the run allowing 137 yards a game and its high point, the best element of this unit, was its play against the pass in which it ranked 23rd.  There were very few defenses worse than Washington’s last NFl betting year.  Sean Taylor, despite his legal problems had yet another solid football betting season leading the team in tackles with 108.  Lemar Marshall also crossed the 100 tackle mark, but no one else on that side of the ball did much of anything.

You can take your pick, a poor offense or a poor defense, as to which element of this team was worse, but at the end of the day, despite all the free agent spending and individual talent brought in, this is a flawed team and flawed system and things won’t get much better until they get a decent QB and shore up the defense.
