Cleveland Browns NFL Point Spreads

NFL Point Spreads on the Browns were the most surprising of the 2007 season. The Browns went 10-6 straight up and a superb 12-4 against the NFL Spread.

The Browns went 9-6-1 toward the Overs against NFL Spread totals. NFL Spreads had the Browns favored more than in previous seasons but with all of that success they did not make the playoffs. The biggest surprise on the team was the play of quarterback Derek Anderson who had a great season throwing for 29 touchdowns according to NFL Point Spreads data.

The team also got a huge lift from running back Jamal Lewis who many NFL Point Spreads experts believed was done after he came over from Baltimore. Lewis had 1,304 yards and 9 TD’s according to NFL Point Spreads data. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards broke the single-season team record for TD’s with 16 while tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. led the team with 82 catches according to NFL Point Spreads numbers. There is no doubt that a lot of the NFL Point Spreads success by the Browns was due to the vastly improved offense. It sure helped that they got a future hall of famer in the draft in Joe Thomas. The offense finished 10th in the NFL in terms of total yards per game according to NFL Point Spreads numbers and that is one reason why the team went over in 9 of their 16 games.

The defense was another story for the Browns. They ranked 27th in the NFL in yards allowed according to NFL Point Spreads data. It was the defense that hurt the Browns but the offense let the team down in a Week #16 game against Cincinnati that they needed to win. Derek Anderson threw four interceptions in that game and the Browns suffered a crushing loss against the NFL Spread.

Looking to 2008 and NFL Point Spreads, the Browns must strengthen what was a very bad defense if they want to make the playoffs. The defensive line and secondary of the Browns are the two areas that need the most work if the team is to improve versus NFL Point Spreads in 2008. The Browns will also need Anderson to prove that his 2007 season was not a fluke if they are to have NFL spread success.
