2009 NFL Strength of Schedule

In some sports, the schedule is virtually the same every year with teams facing the same opponents, but not in the NFL.

The schedule a team has can go a long way towards determining how much success they will have during the season. Last year, the NFL schedule favored teams from the AFC East and NFC South and both divisions did quite well in NFL betting.

In 2009, the AFC East and NFC South have the toughest schedules so you may want to be very cautious backing those teams versus the football odds.

Last year the Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers made the playoffs. This year all three have a much tougher road to success versus sportsbook NFL betting lines. In fact, the Dolphins have the toughest schedule for 2009 based on their opponent’s winning record from last season. People that look at the Dolphins in NFL betting should also be aware that the Dolphins went from worst to first last season, winning the AFC East. Teams that pull off that accomplishment almost always go down substantially the following season versus the football odds at the online sportsbook. The NFL schedule has all but assured the Dolphins will fall in 2009.

Sometimes a team’s schedule can be overcome in NFL betting. Just ask last year’s Pittsburgh Steelers who had the toughest schedule, yet won the Super Bowl. New England has the third toughest schedule in the league this year but they get Tom Brady back so perhaps they can overcome the difficult schedule.

Here is a ranking of the toughest schedules for the 2009 season with last year’s opponent’s win percentage listed.
