2009 SuperBowl Betting Lines
The first thing to consider is how the Superbowl betting line is actually made. What do oddsmakers take into consideration before putting out the line that gamblers see when they bet on Super Bowl games?
Superbowl betting odds are really not as difficult to make for oddsmakers as you might think. The oddsmakers have already seen the two teams a great deal throughout the season. The one thing that will influence the Superbowl betting line more than a regular season line is public opinion. Who is the public likely to take as they bet on Super Bowl odds? This is the most important part of the Superbowl betting odds equation. Forget about all the talk about a bunch of people taking hours to analyze the game before making the Superbowl betting odds. That doesn’t happen. The oddsmakers consult a few people and get a consensus on how the average fan is going to bet on Super bowl action and they make the odds accordingly. That probably will result in the favorite being overvalued since the public is going to take the favorite when they bet on Super Bowl lines.
Let’s take last year’s Super Bowl as an example. The unbeaten New England Patriots were getting all the publicity from the media and the public. Most people believe the Super Bowl would just be a formality. The Superbowl betting odds had the Patriots listed as 11 or 12 point favorites. The real Superbowl betting line should have been between 8 and 10 points. The Patriots had failed to cover seven of their last eight games against the pointspread. They were already extremely overvalued but the oddsmakers knew the public would bet them regardless so the Superbowl betting line was set artificially high. The Giants not only covered the spread, they won the game outright.
Normally oddsmakers try and equal out the action on a game but sometimes that is more fallacy than anything else. In last year’s Super Bowl the oddsmakers just didn’t want to get overloaded with New England money so the Superbowl betting line was set extremely high.
