2009 Totals in NFL Odds

NFL odds don’t offer any guarantees despite what you might hear.

NFL odds give you totals to wager on each week during the season. Many gamblers only wager on sides but totals can sometimes be better bets versus the NFL betting lines. Let’s look at betting totals in NFL odds.

NFL odds totals are where you wager on the amount of points scored in a game. You bet over or under the total set by the NFL odds maker. For example, you might have the Dallas Cowboys playing the New York Giants and the total is 43. You can bet over or under that amount in NFL betting lines. It is just like a side wager versus the NFL odds.

There are many angles to over/under wagering versus NFL odds just as is the case with 'side' wagering and rest assured that the oddsmakers are aware of all of them and, as a result, they adjust the over/under totals posted on the board accordingly. One of the most common and popular ways to bet totals is to wager on the “under” in NFL odds for games being played in foul weather such as rain or snow storms. While this, at first, sounds like a good idea the problem is that the NFL odds makers are fully aware of the public's inclination towards the under in such situations, so they adjust the over/under totals to reflect that fact. That drives the value away from the under and towards the over in NFL betting lines as a result. The same thing happens with expected high scoring games as the total is set very high be the NFL odds maker. So yes, there can be low scoring games that actually go “over” the total and high scoring games that sneak “under” the total because the oddsmakers set lines that reflect the matchup.

There are plusses and minuses to betting totals in NFL betting lines just as there are in sides. The plusses include rooting for both teams to score or not to score instead of rooting for just one. If one team does their job you can still win a bet. If both teams do as expected you can win easily. Another plus is that not as many people wager on totals versus NFL odds and that can sometimes give you value. One drawback to a total is that turnovers and unexpected things can impact the outcome. But that happens with sides as well.

Take a look at totals in NFL odds and you may find some great opportunities to make money.
