AFC Favored in Superbowl Odds
Why are the Steelers such a big favorite in Superbowl betting? The Cardinals are hot, having pulled off three straight upsets, yet they are underdogs in Superbowl odds to the Steelers.
Superbowl odds oftentimes favor the AFC. The AFC has been favored in every Super Bowl since 2002 when the St. Louis Rams were 14 point favorites against the New England Patriots. The Patriots won that game in Superbowl betting, pulling off the second biggest upset in Superbowl betting history.
Just because the AFC has been favored in Superbowl odds does not mean they always cover the spread. In the last six Super Bowls, the AFC and NFC have split against the Superbowl odds. The NFC could have been favored this season but teams like Dallas and the New York Giants faded down the stretch.
Who will bettors choose in Superbowl betting? Will they take the AFC’s Pittsburgh Steelers minus the 7 points or will they take the NFC underdog Arizona Cardinals. The results are mixed which is a good thing for the sportsbooks. It means the number of 7 looks to be the right one in Superbowl odds.
With Superbowl odds there will be some bettors that choose to take the Cardinals on the money line, believing that if they cover the Superbowl odds they will also win the game. The money line has Arizona at about +220. That is far lower than what they should be but with Superbowl odds money lines the underdog always gets shorter odds than they should. It is the one instance where gamblers will take a shot with the underdog. Recently in Superbowl odds that theory has worked, especially last year when the Giants upset the Patriots 17-14. Keep in mind though that long-term numbers show that taking the underdog on the money line in Superbowl odds has not been profitable in the 42 previous Super Bowls.
