Preakness wagering is usually very exciting because there is almost always a horse trying to stay alive for the elusive Triple Crown. The winning Kentucky Derby horse almost always runs in the Preakness unless he is injured or unfit and that horse is usually a heavy favorite in Preakness odds.
Preakness wagering is definitely different than Kentucky Derby wagering. The first major difference in Preakness Stakes betting is the size of the field. A full field of 20 horses usually goes in the Derby while the number of starters in the Preakness is usually half that. The Kentucky Derby usually produces big payoffs because of the large field while Preakness odds are usually lower.
Since there are fewer horses in the Preakness wagering field, favorites do much better. History has show that the favorite rarely wins the Kentucky Derby but the favorite does pretty well in Preakness wagering. Favorites in horse racing traditionally win about a third of the time and that is also the case in the Preakness.
Preakness Stakes betting is the second race in horse racing’s Triple Crown and the shortest of the three races. The winner in Preakness Stakes odds is usually either the Kentucky Derby winner or a horse that at least ran in the Derby. Rarely does a horse win in Preakness betting lines that did not at least start in the Kentucky Derby. The Derby favorite and the horses that finish second and third are oftentimes the three favorites in Preakness lines.
Preakness Wagering does not have quite the build up that Kentucky Derby wagering has since there is only a two week break between races. Usually only the Kentucky Derby winner gets the attention of the betting public and of the Preakness odds maker. That almost always means the Kentucky Derby winner goes off at low Preakness odds. That gives horse bettors that like the rest of the Preakness wagering field a lot of value if they are willing to take a shot against the Derby winner in Preakness Stakes betting.
